Individual Herbs and Supplements
Optimum nutrition is what all horse owners should strive for. This means providing your horse with a diet as close as possible to the horse’s evolved nutritional requirements. When nutritional needs are met good health and vitality will follow and the need for more specific nutritional therapies in particular, medicine can be eliminated or at least reduced.
Under normal natural conditions Horses in the wild would cover on average 32 kilometers/20 miles per day whilst going about their business of grazing. The pastures through which they would travel would be diverse in natural vegetation, thus allowing free access to graze on forage that instinct tells them to eat to balance their nutritional needs.
For thousand of years they have had the ability to instinctively choose the plants, roots and barks they have needed, not only nutrition but also for medicinal reasons.
Feed companies in England, Europe and America have for many years, included herbs and natural minerals into their premixed feed in place of synthetically produce vitamins and minerals.
When a herb or specific mixes of herbs are used, this is what is known as ‘nutritional therapy’. Single herbs or a specific combination of herbs can be used to produce a gentle and effective therapeutic action. This can be important in the management of various conditions such as laminitis.
The use of herbs in this manner is not ‘supplementation’. Using herbs in this way is designed to address the overall diet in order to bring about the desired result.
Feeding a premixed commercial feed in this situation may not bring about the desired effect due to the use of artificial and synthetically produced vitamins and mineral and the high levels of sugar some of these feeds can contain.
Herbs in particular are well suited for use in the daily feeding of horses. Horses have a highly tuned digestive system that naturally utilizes plant species and vegetation. Naturally derived vitamins and minerals found in herbs are generally better absorbed, stored and used more efficiently than synthetic substitutes.
In addition to providing vitamins and minerals, many herbs have the ability to assist with cleansing the horses system, which has to be a bonus in today’s world of poor air quality, pollution, heavily treated soils and chemical crop sprays.
